As irate Kikuyu members reportedly rushed a police station and demanded the quick release of Peter Kinyanjui, also known as Kawanjiru, high drama broke out in Kiambu.

Kawanjiru, a well-known ally of former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua and a well-known young leader in the Democracy for the Citizens Party (DCP), was recently detained again outside Ruiru courts after being released on bond.

His followers were visibly outraged by this second arrest, which came after his first detention in relation to the Gen-Z-led protests and the burning of Kiambu Law Courts on June 25, 2025.

A community’s quick response to what they believe to be targeted political persecution is indicated by the logical flow of events.

Suspicion of political motivations for Kawanjiru’s detention was heightened by his initial arrest and subsequent re-arrest in spite of a court bond.

Many believe that the storming of the police station is an attempt to suppress a prominent member of Gachagua’s political wing and a direct challenge to what they perceive to be an abuse of state power. The presence of the audience confirms their opinion that Kawanjiru is being treated unfairly.

According to reports and eyewitness testimonies, Kawanjiru’s family and supporters tried to stop him from being arrested again outside Ruiru courts, and police reportedly fired rounds into the air to scatter the gathering.

The passionate and tumultuous character of the events was confirmed by the sighting of Kawanjiru’s mother, Beatrice Wanjiru, sobbing and begging for her son’s release.

The dramatic altercation at the police station, which resulted from this collective resistance, showed how the community was unified in demanding justice for their leader.

Political tensions in the nation and the area are reflected in this episode, which is not unique. Kawanjiru has been outspoken in his criticism of the current government, frequently endorsing anti-government slogans such as “Wantam.”

His detention, along with that of Wanjiku Thiga, another DCP youth leader, indicates a deliberate attempt by the government to “tame those with dissenting voices,” according to experts.

Thus, the standoff at the Kiambu police station becomes a potent symbol of the continuous conflict between political groups and the growing willingness of the populace to confront perceived injustices head-on.
