A new twist has emerged in two of Nairobi’s most shocking murder cases after detectives uncovered evidence suggesting that slain lawyer Mathew Kyalo Mbobu and clinical psychologist Dr Victoria Mutiso may have been killed over the same bitter property dispute.
The latest findings have intensified investigations, with police now working to establish whether the two high-profile murders were carefully planned and executed to settle a long-running legal battle.
At the centre of the investigations is Rose Mbithe, a woman who was previously married to a university professor. Detectives believe a years-long dispute that followed the couple’s divorce could hold the key to solving both killings.
According to investigators, lawyer Mbobu represented the professor during the divorce proceedings. Mbithe repeatedly accused the advocate of frustrating a property case and even lodged complaints against him before the Law Society of Kenya. However, the complaints were dismissed.
Mbobu later sued Mbithe for defamation and won Sh1.5 million in damages after the court ruled in his favour. Following several unsuccessful appeals, Mbithe also lost the matrimonial home that had initially been awarded to her.
The property later became occupied by her former husband together with Dr Mutiso, a development that has now become a major focus of the probe.
Mbobu was shot dead on September 9 last year near his home in Karen after motorcycle-riding gunmen ambushed him.
Months later, Dr Mutiso met a similarly tragic fate. She was travelling in a taxi near Kenyatta National Hospital when a Prado reportedly blocked the vehicle before armed men on a motorcycle opened fire. She was rushed to hospital but died from her injuries.
Detectives are now investigating whether the bitter property dispute connects both murders. They are also seeking to establish the whereabouts of the university professor as they piece together the events surrounding the two killings.
