In a fiery online exchange, human rights activist Mercy Tarus has taken aim at fellow activist Morara Kebaso, accusing him of misusing her widely recognized slogan, “Kenya Ni Home.” Tarus, who rose to prominence following the Finland educational scandal, has been a vocal advocate for accountability and transparency. Her slogan has become synonymous with her activism, especially among the youth-led Gen Z movement. However, in recent times, Morara Kebaso has been using the slogan during his civic engagements, a move that has infuriated Tarus.
Tarus publicly called out Kebaso, demanding he come up with his own slogan and stop riding on her message. She didn’t mince words, accusing Kebaso of lacking creativity and originality. “Be creative and stop copying my ideas,” she said, asserting that her slogan belongs to her advocacy work and should not be co-opted for Kebaso’s activities.
The conflict escalated when Tarus made further allegations, claiming that Morara Kebaso has been funded by certain political figures to distort the Gen Z movement’s message. The Gen Z protests, which brought the country to a standstill, were initially centered on civic empowerment and a push for societal change. Tarus argues that Kebaso has used this platform for his own personal gain, turning civic education into what she described as “political rallies,” where he attempts to consolidate a following for himself.
Adding to the drama, Tarus revealed that Kebaso often reaches out to her privately, consulting her on various matters. Yet, according to her, he takes these ideas and presents them as his own in public, portraying himself as the mastermind behind movements and strategies. “He’s always in my DMs and phone logs seeking advice,” Tarus said, labeling Kebaso as a “clueless” figure who lacks true understanding of the issues he claims to champion.
The slogan “Kenya Ni Home” has long been a rallying cry for Mercy Tarus’ activism, symbolizing a sense of national unity and ownership.
