Renowned Kenyan gospel DJ and entertainer Frederick Karumba, popularly known as DJ Krowbar, has opened up about the deeply personal reason he walked away from secular music and dedicated his career to gospel entertainment.
Speaking on Saturday, August 29, 2026, DJ Krowbar said his decision was strongly influenced by his Christian faith and his desire to use his musical talent to make a positive impact on people’s lives.
The entertainer explained that playing gospel music is more than just a professional choice, describing it as a reflection of who he is and what he believes in.
According to Krowbar, music carries enormous influence, and he believes gospel music can encourage, inspire and positively transform listeners.
“People often ask me why I chose this path. The truth is, playing gospel music is simply an overflow of who I am,” he said.
DJ Krowbar revealed that his journey behind the decks began when he was 18 years old, at a time when he mainly played secular music.
However, his perspective on his career changed after a powerful conversation with his mother.
He recalled that his mother challenged him to think seriously about the influence he had over crowds whenever he performed in clubs and other entertainment spaces.
According to the DJ, she asked him to imagine himself standing before a large crowd and consider the direction in which his music and influence were leading the people listening to him.
The message struck him deeply and forced him to reconsider the purpose of his career.
“Imagine the crowd in front of you at the club, and imagine you are the one leading them straight to hell,” Krowbar recalled his mother telling him.
He said the image created by his mother’s words shook him deeply and has remained in his mind for years.
“That picture shook me to my core and honestly, it still stays with me today,” he said.
DJ Krowbar explained that his mother encouraged him to use his talent and influence differently by guiding people towards God and sharing messages that could positively affect their lives.
That advice eventually became a defining moment in his journey and contributed to his decision to leave the secular music scene.
Today, Krowbar says his calling continues to shape every performance and appearance behind the decks.
For the gospel entertainer, DJing is no longer simply about entertaining crowds or selecting popular songs.
Instead, he views music as a platform through which he can share his faith, inspire listeners and use his influence to communicate the message he believes transformed his own life.
His story highlights the powerful role personal conviction and family guidance can play in shaping an artist’s career and the choices they make along the way.
