Accompanied by local and national leaders allied to his political course, Rigathi Gachagua attended a thanksgiving event in Rumuruti, Laikipia West, Laikipia County, held to celebrate the life of matriarch Gladys Wairimu Kariuki.
But it was not just speeches and protocol. The crowd in Kiambu got a rare treat when Gachagua, at the end of his address, surprised everyone by offering to lead them in a chorus straight from the Agikuyu hymn book.
“Moderator, if you allow me just for a few minutes for me and these leaders to join me in singing a chorus. Pass my hymn book to me. Song number 35, let’s go,” said Gachagua as other leaders joined him on stage.
Without missing a beat, he began the song with calm confidence. The crowd joined in, visibly moved by the moment. Loud claps, whistles, and cheers filled the air as the DCP leader led the chorus like a seasoned choirmaster.
Smiling and clearly enjoying himself, Gachagua responded to the crowd’s energy with cheerful nods and wide grins.
Many in the crowd were charmed by the personal and spiritual touch, a break from the usual tough political tone.
For a few moments, politics gave way to praise, and Gachagua, often known for fiery speeches, showed a lighter, more human side.
Though a simple gesture, it struck struck the right chord judging from the way they reacted to Gachagua’s rare move.
