Wambugu and Waithera

Fresh twists have emerged in the murder case of a 23-year-old M-Pesa agent from Nakuru, as detectives revealed how her husband allegedly tried to divert the investigation soon after reporting her missing.

Zachary Wambugu, the husband of the slain woman, is now the main suspect in a chilling case that began as a routine disappearance. His wife, identified as Ms Waithera, vanished on May 21 after leaving work.

A week later, her decomposing body was discovered dumped in Technology Farm, located in Nakuru West.

While appearing before a Nakuru court on June 3, detectives detailed how Wambugu’s conduct raised red flags.

He initially went to report her disappearance just two hours after a theft case involving a domestic worker had been logged at the same police station.

Officers advised him to wait until the next day, but this early action, paired with other inconsistencies, drew attention.Detectives told the court that both Wambugu’s and his wife’s phones were traced to the same location on the day she disappeared.

Yet Wambugu claimed his friends had tracked her phone moving toward Kijabe, a narrative investigators now believe was meant to derail the probe.

Following this, officers launched a deeper investigation that eventually led them to Waithera’s body on May 26.

DCI is now seeking to detain Wambugu for 21 days to allow time for DNA tests, witness interviews, and forensic analysis of phone data.

His legal team has opposed the move, claiming he has fully cooperated and should be granted bail.
