Gachags

Rigathi Gachagua, Kenya’s former Deputy President, has abruptly ended his official tour of the United States, returning to Nairobi under a cloud of controversy and speculation. Citing the need to prepare for the upcoming by-elections set for November 27, Gachagua apologized to the Kenyan diaspora for cutting the trip short—but many suspect deeper reasons behind his sudden exit.

His return coincides with a brewing political storm. During his U.S. visit, Gachagua dropped bombshell allegations against President William Ruto, accusing him of secret meetings with terror-linked groups and of pushing for unregulated voter registration. These explosive claims triggered backlash from top government officials, with Interior CS Kipchumba Murkomen demanding Gachagua record a statement upon landing—a move hinting at looming investigations.

This is just the latest in a series of political clashes. Gachagua, once a key ally of Ruto, survived a bruising impeachment attempt in 2024 amid corruption and misconduct accusations. Though he denied all charges, the episode marked his dramatic shift from power broker to political outcast.

Tensions escalated in mid-2025 during national protests, with Gachagua being accused—without solid proof—of fanning ethnic discord. He also claims his government-issued security was withdrawn, raising fears for his safety.

While official statements remain vague, insiders believe mounting legal pressure and internal party warfare played a major role in his early return. With by-elections looming and political temperatures soaring, all eyes are now on Gachagua as he steps back into Kenya’s volatile arena.
