Tension filled the air in Kisii on Friday, September 26, 2025, after an Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) event at Gusii Stadium turned chaotic. The meeting, which had been organized as part of the build-up to the party’s 20th anniversary celebrations, was disrupted when violence broke out during the arrival of Governor Simba Arati.

What was expected to be a festive occasion quickly changed as a group of youths started throwing stones inside the stadium. Security officers rushed in to control the situation, but the unrest forced a temporary stop to the program. Many in the crowd were left unsettled, unsure of what had triggered the hostility.

The scene grew more intense as Arati’s motorcade entered the grounds. Instead of cheers, he was met by hostility, with both shouting and stone-throwing aimed in his direction. Those present described the moment as tense and openly confrontational. The hostility suggested that disagreements within the local ODM branch had spilled into the open, using the high-profile event as a stage.

The incident overshadowed the party’s intention to showcase unity and strength ahead of its anniversary. ODM had hoped to use Kisii as a launch pad for the festivities, but instead the images beamed across the country painted a picture of discord.
