Fresh controversy erupted today in the trial of former Nairobi Central Police Station OCS, Samson Talaam, following claims that his seized mobile phone was used in a bribery scheme targeting his family and friends.

Defence lawyer Danstan Omari told Milimani Magistrate Caroline Mugo that the device—confiscated by IPOA on June 15 during investigations into the murder of blogger Albert Ojwang—was reportedly used to solicit cash.

According to Omari, prominent lawyer Cliff Ombeta received a call from Talaam’s number, with the caller demanding Ksh 80,000, claiming Talaam urgently needed help. Several of Talaam’s relatives also received similar demands for money described as a “rescue fee.”

Omari accused IPOA officers of allowing the misuse of evidence in their custody, arguing they had both the phone and its passwords. He urged the court to hold the commissioners accountable if the allegations are proven.

Currently, the main suspect in the fraud, Brian Kiprotich Kiprono, remains in detention. The prosecution asked for more time to review the matter, prompting the court to postpone his plea hearing. The case has raised public concern over the integrity and security of evidence under state investigation.
