Edwin Sifuna

Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna has cleared up the confusion about who should manage roads in Kenya.

Speaking during an interview with Spice FM, He explained that the Constitution only recognizes two types of roads: national roads and county roads.

“There are only two levels of roads stated in the Constitution: national roads and county roads. It’s about constitutional purity. If the Constitution sets out two types of roads at two levels, then that’s what should be followed,” Sifuna said.

He pointed out that major roads, like the one connecting Mombasa to Malaba, are national roads and should be managed by the national government. He made it clear that all other roads, which are not national, should fall under the responsibility of county governments.

“Everyone knows that the road from Mombasa to Malaba is a national road and should be handled by the national government. All other roads fall under the responsibility of county governments,” he added.

Sifuna’s statement comes as the government works to clear confusion over road ownership and management between national and county governments.
