Kenya has been shaken by the horrific murder of 18-year-old Abigael Winner Wanjiku. Her body was found naked and mutilated in her family’s house in Mwiki. She had been raped, stabbed five times in the stomach, and struck on the head.
Police also found deep cuts on her neck and ear. A bloodstained knife and cooking pan were recovered from the scene.
Her mother, who runs a kiosk nearby, had seen her alive only hours earlier. Abigael had delivered food to her before returning home. When her mother came back later that night, she found her daughter lying lifeless in a pool of blood.
Residents could not stay silent. On Friday, crowds blocked Mwiki-Kasarani Road, demanding arrests. Police responded with live bullets. A man, Joshua Nderitu, was shot and seriously injured during the chaos.
No suspect has been arrested. Kenyans online are furious. Many say this is part of a rising trend of violence against young women. One user wrote, “We are burying our daughters every week.” Others blame the police for ignoring warning signs.
A special task force has been formed, but people remain doubtful. For many, Abigael’s death is not just a crime. It is a national crisis.
