Questions continue to swirl around the death of former Lugari MP Cyrus Jirongo following conflicting accounts about his final hours.
The veteran politician died on December 13 after his Mercedes-Benz was involved in a head-on collision with a bus along the Nairobi–Nakuru Highway.
In the days after his death, several narratives emerged, some of which suggested that Jirongo had been with a woman shortly before the fatal crash.
These claims have sparked public debate and sharp reactions from leaders and members of the public.
Renowned politician Gloria Orwoba has now strongly condemned the reports, accusing unnamed “powerful people” of deliberately pushing false narratives meant to tarnish Jirongo’s name.
Speaking while visiting Jirongo’s home, Orwoba described him as an open and honest man who never lived a secretive life.
She questioned why attention had shifted from seeking truth and accountability to spreading rumours about alleged personal relationships.
Orwoba dismissed claims about a handbag allegedly found in Jirongo’s car, arguing that such stories were being used to scandalise a man who could no longer defend himself.
Orwoba further claimed that the state was behind the sustained push to suggest Jirongo was dropping off a woman on the night before his death.
According to her, this narrative was not only unfair but deeply disrespectful to his family, especially given the unity displayed by his wives during mourning.
She insisted that Kenyans deserved clear and factual answers about what truly happened, rather than speculation aimed at distracting the public.
Orwoba added that Jirongo was fearless in speaking his mind, and in Kenya, such courage often comes at a cost.
As investigations continue, politicians from Jirongo’s community and the opposition have echoed similar sentiments, urging authorities to focus on facts surrounding the accident.
Many Kenyans online have also weighed in, with some calling for restraint and respect, while others argue that the tragedy is being unnecessarily politicised.
