Kenyan actor and content creator Alex Mathenge has announced that he is stepping away from social media and plans to sell his Facebook, Instagram, TikTok and YouTube accounts for at least KSh500,000.
Mathenge said the decision follows several difficult years in his personal and professional life, during which he experienced setbacks in his entertainment career and struggled with his mental wellbeing.
According to Mathenge, he lost several acting and content-creation opportunities, eventually closed his studio and sold his production equipment. He also lost his father in 2024, a period he described as one of the lowest points of his life.
The actor said therapy played an important role in helping him recover from the difficulties he had experienced. He credited the process with helping him become happier and more productive.
Despite that progress, Mathenge has now decided that he wants to leave social media behind.
He said he intends to put his Facebook, Instagram, TikTok and YouTube pages up for sale, with the combined asking price starting at KSh500,000.
Mathenge also spoke about difficult experiences in his relationships with women, which he said contributed to some of the challenges he faced. Rather than continuing with the pressures associated with public life and content creation, he said he now wants to pursue a more ordinary job and enjoy a quieter lifestyle.
His decision highlights a side of the creator economy that is often less visible to audiences. Behind popular pages and entertainment careers can be financial uncertainty, pressure to remain visible, declining opportunities and personal struggles that followers may never see.
For Mathenge, walking away appears to be less about simply abandoning social media and more about choosing a different direction after a difficult period.
