Former Interior Cabinet Secretary Dr Fred Matiang’i is set to make a high-profile political return today, with sources revealing a powerful lineup of leaders expected to accompany him as he begins a tour of the Gusii region.
According to insiders from the Team Matiang’i Secretariat, the former CS will be joined by a delegation of top elected leaders including Kisii Governor Simba Arati, Nyamira Governor Amos Nyaribo.
Also in the delegation is Kisii Senator Richard Onyonka and Nyamira Senator Okong’o Mogeni.
Several Members of Parliament and Members of County Assembly from the region are also expected to participate.
The leaders will accompany Matiang’i on a day-long tour beginning at 9am in Chepilat, along the Nyamira-Bomet border.
The itinerary includes major stopovers in Kijauri, Keroka, Keumbu, Kisii town, Chepilat, Kemera, Kebirigo, Ekerenyo, and Nyamira town, where a series of public engagements and courtesy visits to county offices will take place.
Sources say that the move is widely seen as the launchpad for his 2027 presidential ambitions.
The tour marks Matiang’i’s first public appearance this year and comes after he held a series of consultative meetings with opposition leaders earlier in the week.
The events are widely interpreted as the start of his political re-entry, with speculation mounting that he may officially declare his intention to run for president in 2027.
Nakuru West MP Samuel Arama, a key ally, said the event will likely provide a platform for Matiang’i to clarify his political direction.
“This is the moment for him to speak to the people and declare whether he is serious about seeking the presidency,” Arama said.
Signs of an organized campaign are already visible, with supporters donning branded caps and T-shirts emblazoned with Matiang’i’s name.
United Progressive Alliance party chairman Gisesa Nyambega confirmed that preparations were complete to welcome the former CS.
