Kenyans are talking a lot after Kapseret MP Oscar Sudi spoke about the drama involving Butere Girls High School at the National Drama Festival in Nakuru.
The school refused to perform their play Echoes of War because their director, Cleophas Malala, was arrested.
Sudi said parents and teachers should protect children from being used in political fights by selfish leaders.
He added that plays should bring people together, not divide them, and that “dirty politics” does not help the country.
The Butere Girls students walked off the stage on Thursday morning, saying they would not perform without Malala.
They also complained about not having a proper stage, sound system, or audience.
Many Kenyans on social media shared their thoughts after Sudi’s statement. Some agreed with him, while others supported the students.
A user named Raffidan Muasa wrote on Facebook that children should know the truth about the country’s problems, not be shielded from them.
He said they need to learn about bad governance to be ready for the future.
Another user, Miwaters Ade Ticha, quoted the Teachers Service Commission (TSC) rules, saying teachers must protect students and keep politics out of school activities, She agreed with Sudi that children should not be involved in such fights.
However, Charles Waithaka felt the government was acting like the play’s story by arresting Malala and stopping the performance.
He said the government was proving the play’s message about bad leadership.
Wambo Baibe suggested the play should have been about other issues, like how some leaders work while others are ignored, instead of politics.
The Echoes of War play has caused a big debate in Kenya. Some see it as a way for students to express themselves, while others, like Sudi, think it pulls children into adult political battles.
