April 9, 2025, was filled with drama in the Senate as Uasin Gishu Senator Jackson Mandago and Nandi Senator Samson Cherargei clashed during a heated debate. The exchange took place in front of other lawmakers, causing surprise and laughter among those present.
The fight started when Senator Cherargei made a comment comparing Nandi County to Eldoret. He suggested that Nandi County had more potential than Eldoret.
This did not sit well with Mandago, who angrily shot back, “Don’t compare Eldoret to Nandi, you are very poor!”
The comment sparked tension in the Senate as the two senators went back and forth, accusing each other of failing to develop their respective counties.
Mandago, representing Eldoret in Uasin Gishu, emphasized how his county has made great strides economically and socially compared to Nandi.
“You can’t compare Eldoret to Nandi, we are far ahead,” Mandago said, visibly frustrated. “You’re talking like you have something to show, but I can tell you, your county is far behind!”
On the other hand, Senator Cherargei wasn’t backing down either. He defended Nandi County, saying that progress was being made and that they were proud of what they had achieved, despite Mandago’s remarks.
Kenyans reacted to the clash on social media with mixed feelings;
“This is embarrassing for our leaders. They should focus on working for their people, not fighting like children,” said Elizabeth Muthoni, a resident of Nairobi.
However, Kevin Kiprotich from Eldoret had a different view: “Mandago is right. Eldoret is a key economic hub in the region. We should be proud of our growth.”
The clash between the two senators ended after the Speaker of the Senate called for order, but it left many questioning the focus of the debate and the maturity of the leaders involved.
