Shem Bajura

Shem Bajura Bageine, a prominent Ugandan politician and former Minister of State for East African Affairs, has lived a life marked by ambition and controversy.

Known for his role in advancing regional integration during his tenure at the East African Legislative Assembly (EALA), Bageine’s political journey began at Makerere University, where he met his future wife, Elizabeth Wanjiru, famously known for her role as “Charity” in the popular Kenyan sitcom Mother-in-law. Their relationship, however, was fraught with challenges.

Bageine and Wanjiru, both active in the university’s Drama Club, married and started a family in Nairobi. Their union lasted 13 years before they separated in 1981, during a tumultuous time in Uganda under Idi Amin’s regime.

Wanjiru recounted that the couple had diverging ambitions and lifestyles, ultimately leading to their estrangement. Despite not officially divorcing, their lives took starkly different paths after their split.

Bageine returned to Uganda, where he built a successful political career, while Wanjiru pursued her acting ambitions in Kenya.

Wanjiru later revealed that her marriage was marked by abuse, leading her to seek help from the police on multiple occasions.

She stated, “We had different personalities based on religion and ambitions, so we parted ways. I live alone like someone who was never blessed with children,” referring to their three children who remained with Bageine after their separation. This heartbreaking reality reflects the emotional toll of their marriage.

Despite her pain, Wanjiru expressed her enduring love for her children, emphasizing that she welcomed them back into her life whenever they chose to return.

She maintained a distant relationship with them, as they primarily lived with their father and his new family.

Her struggles continued even after their separation; Wanjiru fought a lengthy legal battle to secure her rights, ultimately winning in 2015, yet she faced challenges in receiving compensation.
