Joseph Omuse, once a street boy in Kitale known locally as county commissioner, has completed his training at the Kenya Defence Forces. The news broke on August 14, 2026, and his home community wasted no time celebrating.
Years ago, a Bungoma based pastor found Omuse living on the streets and decided to take him in. He had noticed the boy’s talent with a football and wanted to give him a real shot at something better.
That decision led Omuse to St Anthony Boys High School in Kitale, where his talent on the pitch quickly became hard to ignore. He went on to help lead the school to victory at the national high school games.
Word of his story eventually reached beyond Kitale altogether. A Spanish footballer heard about him and sent a gift of KSh 100,000 along with a new pair of boots.
Even before his KDF graduation, Omuse showed he had not forgotten where he came from. After a trip to China, he went back to visit street children he once knew and handed out food and small gifts.
That small act meant a lot to people who had been following his journey. It said something about a young man who had not let his own success pull him away from his roots.
A local group known as Solidarity Boys Kitale shared the news of his graduation online, welcoming him into the Kenya Army. They described his passing out as another chapter in a story many Kenyans have grown attached to.
From sleeping rough in Kitale to standing out on a football pitch to now wearing a KDF uniform, Omuse’s journey has struck a chord nationwide. For many young people watching, his story is proof that where you start does not have to decide where you end up.
