The Communications Authority of Kenya (CA) has recently announced the release of the 4th edition of the Programming Code for Broadcasting Services, which introduces revised guidelines for television and radio content. The updated regulations, set to take effect within the next 30 days, cover a range of areas including election coverage, advertisements, content for children, and religious content.

One significant change in the guidelines is the prohibition of using “News Flash” or “breaking news” before the start of an advertisement. Additionally, all forms of advertising for tobacco products will continue to be banned, and advertisements are not to exceed 10 minutes in any 30-minute broadcast slot. The regulations also emphasize that advertisements should not unfairly attack or discredit other advertisers, products, or advertisements.

In terms of election coverage, media houses will be required to apply consistent rates for airtime allocated to politicians and political candidates. Furthermore, they are expected to avoid bias towards any political party, coalition, or candidate.

These updated guidelines aim to ensure responsible and fair broadcasting practices across various content areas, marking a significant development in the regulation of broadcast content in Kenya.
