On Wednesday, June 21, a matatu driver was charged in court after reportedly impeding First Lady Rachel Ruto’s motorcade.
Speaking to media houses, the driver revealed that he was detained while transporting passengers to Kakamega along University Way in Nairobi at around 6.30 am.
The suspect disclosed that after being transported to Kabete Police Station, he went to court to await charges.
“They claimed that I was preventing the first lady’s cars from moving. I’m still awaiting the court’s ruling,” he said.
The driver of the car was allegedly harshly treated by the police, according to a passenger.
“Is this service available to everyone? An innocent driver was arbitrarily brought before the court. I now see why innocent people suffer in prison,” the passenger bemoaned.According to the source, after the driver in issue was detained by the police, the corporation quickly set up a substitute to continue the trip.”As a citizen, I feel that the police officer falsely accused the driver,” he continued.
The motorist allegedly waited for almost 15 minutes after the convoy had passed before being detained and charged with obstruction.
The incident happened just two weeks after a security team working for President William Ruto on June 7 reported a cab driver to the police for a similar infraction.
As the President’s convoy traveled to Safari Park for the yearly National Prayer Breakfast, the driver made an effort to defend himself by stating that his vehicle had broken down.When a motorbike stopped, he was instructed to pull his automobile off the road as he was looking at the car to find the problem.
He described how additional officers arrived to assist in pushing the automobile to the side of the road. After being questioned for an hour, he was let go.
