A bright girl from Mukuru Kwa Njenga’s slum in Nairobi County has a reason to smile after the Nairobi County government cleared her school fees, starting from Form One to Form Four.
Governor Johnson Sakaja cleared Petronila Mutono’s school fees after her unfortunate story was highlighted by the media, particularly Citizen TV.
She scored 419 marks and emerged at number one in Embakasi South but she was on the brink of missing her slot at the National school due to a lack of school fees.
At first, ODM Senator Edwin Sifuna had offered to educate the girl to Form Four only for the county government to move ahead of him and clear her school fees
“Thank you @JNjorogeMuchiri for passing our support to Petronila Mutono who scored 419 marks to top Embakasi South but had no fees. We have laid Petronila’s fees for all her 4 years of High School. Petronila go on and be great! The World is yours,” the governor tweeted.
The girl is joining St Theresese Mbooni Girls High School in Makueni County.
She has since been instructed to keep on updating the governor on how her education journey progresses.
Edwin Sifuna had earlier tweeted asking the girl and her parents to visit her at his KICC office as he promised to take over the case and educate the girl.
“Nitasomesha huyu @citizentvkenya . Akuje afisini jumatatu. KICC room 301,” said the ODM lawmaker, which loosely translates to (I will be educating this one, Let her come to my office on Monday).
Petronila aspires to be a journalist and Citizen TV’s Lulu Hassan is her role model.
She promised the County government of Nairobi that she would do her best and pass her exams.
Her father thanked the Governor for helping her daughter join her dream school.
