Margaret a mother of 3 children from Nairobi Mukuru slums Painfully narrated how her Inlaws accused her of bewitching her husband after he died. They washed his body and forced her to drink that water.
She was born and raised in Western Kenya. After completing her primary education, she moved to Nairobi where she was employed as a house helper. After several years, she got into a relationship with a man which ended in marriage.
Their marriage was. one to be admired. Her Inlaws had accepted her and had even paid for her dowry. They were blessed with two children together. When her last born was one year old, her husband started complaining of severe headaches now and then.
She took her to Kenyatta hospital but later on the doctors told her that her husband was HIV Positive which was at its last stage. When he was discharged from the hospital, his health was deteriorating she took him to the village. After 3 days he passed away.
She went outside and started crying and shouting to mourn her husband acc6to their culture. Her Inlaws later took her into the house and asked her to drink strong tea claiming that there was no more milk. She drank the tea and went to her house. One of her aunts followed her and disclosed to her that the water that washed her husband’s body was the one she drank.
The Inlaws were saying that she was the one who bewitched her husband and would also die after drinking the water according to their culture but she didn’t die. After burying her husband they demolished her house in the village. According to her, that was a sign that she was not needed in that homestead.
When she went back to Nairobi, she found her house empty. Her Inlaws took everything from her house claiming that their son was the one who bought them. It has been more than ten years now and has been raising her kids doing manual jobs.
