The Orange Democratic Movement’s (ODM) communication director, Philip Etale’s, Twitter account has been compromised by cryptocurrency scammers, and the ODM has warned its followers not to interact with information shared by it.
According to ODM, the account was compromised on Saturday, October 22, around 6 p.m.
“Our director of communication, Philip Etale, reportedly had his Twitter account hacked by unknown individuals.”
“This happened less than thirty minutes ago,” the party stated.
Before it was hacked, Etale’s account had amassed nearly 500,000 followers.
It’s noteworthy that the hackers pinned a message enticing Kenyans to participate in the cryptocurrency project.
Within an hour, the first tweet received at least 4,000 likes and about 2,000 retweets. The hacker also changed CZ Binance’s user name from Philip Etale.
A link was posted on the article that points curious users away from the social media site. Digital security professionals cautioned against clicking the link though because it might have been malicious.
ODM asked the supporters to disregard all information shared because they were aware of the potential impact the changes to the account could have on them.
ODM advised the public to disregard any information posted on the handle and urged Kenyans on Twitter to do the same.
Before the media outlet regained control, the bold hackers live-streamed and talked about digital currency.
Twitter suggests that the first step in regaining control of a compromised account is to ask for a password reset link to be sent to their email addresses.
To safeguard their accounts, users can also start the two-step verification process.
