The United States Green Card Lottery is keeping many hopeful applicants waiting as uncertainty continues over the opening of the next registration period. The programme, officially known as the Diversity Visa Lottery, offers eligible people an opportunity to apply for permanent residence in the United States.

Many people around the world look forward to the lottery because it could give them a chance to live, work and build a future in America. However, the delayed registration process has left prospective applicants waiting for clear information about when they can submit their applications.

The US Department of State announced changes to the 2027 Diversity Visa programme in November 2025 but did not initially provide a registration date. The delay prompted legal action, with a federal judge ordering the government to proceed with the programme under a revised timetable.

Under the court’s order, the department was required to announce registration details by October 29, 2026, with registration scheduled to open by November 1, unless the order is changed or suspended. The US government has appealed the decision, meaning the situation could still change.

The Green Card Lottery provides up to 55,000 immigrant visas annually under the programme’s general allocation, although the number available in a particular year can be lower. Applicants must meet specific eligibility requirements, including rules on their country of birth and education or qualifying work experience.

Those interested in applying should regularly check the official US Department of State website for the latest announcements. They should also be careful when dealing with individuals or websites promising guaranteed selection.

The official entry website is dvprogram.state.gov. Applicants should avoid sharing personal information with unverified agents or paying people who claim they can guarantee a place in the lottery.

Although the delay has created uncertainty, prospective applicants should remain alert for official updates instead of relying on rumours circulating on social media.

For many hopeful applicants, the biggest question remains when the registration process will officially open and whether the announced timetable will remain unchanged.
