James Mburu has transformed a humble upbringing into an inspiring story of entrepreneurship and determination.
Having grown up in poverty and earned a reported KSh 20 per week while working as a shamba boy in Nairobi, Mburu has gone on to establish a media enterprise comprising three television stations and one radio station.
Mburu was raised in Karangatha, Nyandarua County, where his parents relied on small-scale farming to support their family. Financial difficulties made it challenging to provide basic necessities and pay for his education.
He has recounted how the family’s struggles were so severe that villagers would sometimes suspect them when property went missing. Despite these challenges, Mburu remained focused on improving his circumstances and building a better future.
His journey towards financial independence began with his passion for music. While looking after his grandfather’s livestock, a well-wisher reportedly heard him singing and was impressed by his voice. The individual offered to help him record songs in a studio, opening the door to his first opportunity to earn money through his talent.
Mburu later began selling music cassettes, using the proceeds to assist his parents while saving towards his education.
After completing high school, he moved to Nairobi in search of better opportunities and found work as a shamba boy, reportedly earning just KSh 20 weekly. Despite the meagre income, he continued pursuing his ambitions.
He subsequently enrolled in nursing school before securing employment at a hospital in Nyandarua County, where he worked for three years. He later attended a herbal school in Limuru, gaining experience that helped him venture into the healthcare sector.
Mburu eventually established Mukeu Herbal Clinic, an enterprise he says has grown to 47 branches across Kenya and three in Tanzania. The business reportedly employs more than 50 people.
In 2018, he expanded into broadcasting by launching Jambu TV. His media venture later grew to include Mukeu TV, Karindi TV and Jambu FM, alongside the J Mburu Official YouTube channel.
Beyond running his businesses, Mburu is also active in music and film production. He has reportedly recorded more than 100 songs and written over 300 films that have been aired on his television network.
His entrepreneurial journey has also attracted attention on social media, where a humorous post portrayed him as taking on nearly every role at his broadcasting station. The post jokingly depicted him presenting news, operating cameras, producing programmes and even appearing as a guest.
Mburu’s story highlights how persistence, creativity and a willingness to pursue different opportunities can help turn humble beginnings into a diverse business venture.
