The International Monetary Fund (IMF) has issued a fresh outlook on global oil prices as Kenyans prepare for the next fuel price announcement by the Energy and Petroleum Regulatory Authority (EPRA). The forecast comes at a time when motorists, businesses and households are keen to know whether petrol, diesel and kerosene prices will rise or fall.

Oil prices remain an important factor in determining the cost of living in Kenya. Changes in the international petroleum market can affect the amount consumers pay at local fuel stations, depending on import costs, exchange rates and other expenses considered during the price review.

The IMF’s latest projection could therefore attract attention from consumers and businesses that depend heavily on fuel. Transport operators, in particular, closely monitor changes in petroleum prices because fuel accounts for a significant share of their daily operating expenses.

When fuel prices increase, public transport operators may face pressure to adjust fares to cover their costs. Such changes can affect commuters, traders and families who rely on public transport to move people and goods across the country.

Farmers and manufacturers are also affected by fuel price movements because petroleum products contribute to transportation, production and distribution costs. Any sustained increase can place additional pressure on the prices of goods and services.

EPRA reviews maximum retail prices for petroleum products every month, taking into account several factors, including international oil prices, the cost of importing fuel and the applicable exchange rate. The regulator’s announcement determines the prices that apply at petrol stations across the country during the specified period.

However, a change in the IMF’s oil price forecast does not automatically translate into an immediate adjustment at Kenyan fuel stations. The impact depends on the pricing period and the other costs included in EPRA’s calculations.

Kenyans will now be watching the regulator’s next announcement for clarity on the direction of fuel prices. Any reduction could offer relief to motorists and businesses, while an increase could add pressure to household budgets.
