Uprooting

Residents of Kakamega town witnessed the effects of the ongoing rainy season after heavy rains, strong winds and a storm uprooted a large tree along Mumias Road.

The incident comes as Kenya enters the October–December (OND) rainy season, a period when several parts of the country are expected to experience increased rainfall. The uprooted tree highlighted the potential dangers associated with severe weather, particularly in busy urban areas where trees stand close to roads and buildings.

A photograph taken by Benjamin Sakwa showed the large tree lying across the roadside after being brought down by the storm. The incident drew attention to the possible disruption that heavy rainfall and strong winds can cause to daily activities.

Mumias Road is among the routes used by motorists, pedestrians and other road users in Kakamega town. Incidents involving fallen trees can create safety concerns, especially when they obstruct traffic or leave branches scattered along the road.

The situation also serves as a reminder for residents to exercise caution whenever strong winds and heavy rainfall occur. Trees weakened by age, disease or unstable soil may be more vulnerable to falling during storms, although the specific condition of the tree involved in this incident was not immediately established.

As the October–December rains continue, residents are being reminded of the importance of staying alert to changing weather conditions. Motorists should drive carefully during downpours, while pedestrians should avoid standing beneath large trees when strong winds begin.

The incident in Kakamega comes at a time when Kenyans are preparing for weeks of potentially unsettled weather. The full impact of the rainy season will depend on rainfall patterns across different counties.

Residents are encouraged to follow official weather advisories and take precautions to protect themselves and their property as the rains intensify.
