President William Ruto and his estranged former deputy, Rigathi Gachagua, are set to be in the United States at the same time, a development that has sparked fresh political speculation in Kenya ahead of the 2027 General Election.
The unusual overlap comes at a politically sensitive moment, with both leaders working to shape their respective political futures after their relationship deteriorated dramatically during Ruto’s first term in office.
Gachagua has embarked on an extended multi-city tour of the United States, with stops reportedly including Spokane, Portland, Kansas, Dallas and Boston. The former deputy president has previously indicated that his prolonged stay abroad would give him an opportunity to reflect on his political future away from the pressures and influence of local political allies.
President Ruto, meanwhile, is expected to travel to New York to attend the United Nations General Assembly, placing the two former political allies in the US during the same period.
The development has inevitably fueled speculation about whether the two could hold discussions away from the intense political environment in Kenya. However, there has been no official confirmation that Ruto and Gachagua have arranged a meeting or intend to engage in direct talks.
Former Cabinet Secretary and presidential adviser Moses Kuria had previously suggested that the two leaders would be in America at the same time, remarks that added to speculation about a possible opportunity for communication between them.
Nandi Senator Samson Cherargei has also weighed in on the political situation, claiming that Gachagua has made efforts to explore backchannel negotiations. According to Cherargei, however, Ruto has maintained a firm position against working with political leaders whom he believes promote divisive rhetoric.
The relationship between Ruto and Gachagua has remained strained since their political fallout, with Gachagua increasingly positioning himself as a potential force in the opposition ahead of 2027.
As Ruto works to strengthen his national alliances and secure support for another presidential bid, Gachagua is similarly seeking to consolidate his political base and expand his influence.
For now, the simultaneous presence of the two leaders in the United States remains officially a coincidence. Nevertheless, with the 2027 political contest gradually taking shape, any unexpected contact between them could attract significant attention and potentially alter Kenya’s evolving political landscape.
