An unexpected twist has emerged in the murder investigation involving MP aspirant Nathan Masai Wasama after the husband of a woman linked to the slain politician came forward to reject claims of a romantic relationship.
The controversy followed remarks by Mt Elgon MP Fred Kapondi, who suggested that Wasama’s death could have been connected to a love triangle.The MP alleged that the politician had been with the wife of a security guard at Mlatiwa Secondary School shortly before he was killed.
Kapondi further claimed that Wasama had been preparing to take a shower outside his shop when the incident occurred.
The allegations raised questions about what may have happened in the moments leading to his death.
However, the woman’s husband has strongly dismissed the claims, coming to his wife’s defence shortly after the MP addressed the matter publicly.
He denied that his wife had an affair with Wasama and instead described his relationship with the deceased as cordial.
The husband said Wasama had been his neighbour for a long time and that they had never experienced any disagreement. He maintained that the slain politician had been a close friend and that there had been no conflict between them.
His remarks have added a new dimension to the investigation, although the alleged love triangle has not been established as the motive for the killing.Police investigations remain ongoing as detectives work to determine what led to Wasama’s death.
Five suspects have so far been arrested in connection with the murder.
Three of them, Oscar Koech Sakong, Wycliffe Chesubei Ngeiwa, also known as Chota, and Geoffrey Makwere Masai, were arrested during raids in Cheptais.
Detectives recovered several items during one of the operations in Marigo Village, including a smoke jacket, stun grenade, axes, crowbars, pangas, knives, arrows, motorcycles and mobile phones.
Two other suspects later surrendered to police. Robert Kimutai Psisei, alias Robert Miti, reported to Cheptais Police Station, while Brian Chongin Kaos surrendered at Chwele Police Station.
The Directorate of Criminal Investigations said the suspects remained in custody as detectives continued gathering evidence before taking the case to court.
