The Mt Kenya East Council of Elders has resolved to support Deputy President Kithure Kindiki unconditionally, boosting his bid to remain President William Ruto’s running mate ahead of the 2027 General Election.
Speaking during the gathering held on Saturday, August 15, 2026, the elders said the time had come for Mt Kenya West to reciprocate the support Mt Kenya East has extended to political leaders from the western side of the region in the past.
They urged the region to back Kindiki unconditionally, both as Deputy President and in his future ambitions of becoming the first President from Mt Kenya East.
Cabinet Secretary Ruku was in attendance during the event, joining other leaders in rallying support for Kindiki’s political standing within the broader Mt Kenya region.
The elders’ resolution comes amid growing talk of a possible split between Mt Kenya East and Mt Kenya West ahead of the 2027 polls, with different factions within the larger Mt Kenya bloc reportedly leaning toward different political camps as the country’s political landscape continues to shift.
The push for Mt Kenya West to back Kindiki appears aimed at consolidating the region’s political support behind a single figure, amid concerns that a divided Mt Kenya vote could weaken the bloc’s overall influence in the 2027 race.
Kindiki has increasingly sought to position himself as a unifying figure for the larger Mt Kenya region, even as other leaders from the region continue jostling for influence within Kenya Kwanza and rival political outfits.
The elders’ declaration adds to the ongoing political realignment taking place across Mt Kenya, as different camps continue negotiating who among the region’s leaders should carry its political weight into the next General Election.
