Content creator Dan Wema has revealed that Samuel Akuyi, whose medical journey has rallied thousands of Kenyans through an online fundraising campaign over the past two months, has declined to undergo a life-saving surgery after doctors reportedly informed him that the procedure would permanently leave him unable to father children.
According to Wema, Samuel has been receiving specialised treatment for severe injuries that affected his reproductive organs and required complex surgery, but the prospect of losing his fertility has left him emotionally devastated.
In a Facebook post shared on Thursday, Wema said surgeons had completed preparations for the operation after weeks of treatment and close monitoring.
However, before the procedure began, the medical team reportedly explained to Samuel that while the surgery would save his life, the extent of the damage meant he would not be able to have biological children.
The revelation, Wema said, broke Samuel’s spirit, prompting him to refuse the operation despite repeated efforts by doctors, relatives and counsellors to persuade him otherwise.
“We have tried everything. We have begged him, we have cried with him, and we even brought in a specialist counselor to talk to him and help him process the news, but he has completely refused,” Wema wrote.
Samuel’s story first gained national attention after Wema appealed to Kenyans to help raise money for his treatment. The appeal attracted donations from well-wishers across the country, allowing him to remain in hospital as doctors worked to stabilise his condition and prepare him for surgery.
Regular updates on his progress turned his case into one of the most closely followed online medical fundraising campaigns in recent months.
Wema described the latest development as the most heartbreaking setback since the campaign began, saying it was painful to watch Samuel walk away from what doctors believe is his best chance of survival.
He appealed to Kenyans to continue praying for Samuel, expressing hope that he will find the strength to reconsider the operation. By the time of his update, it remained unclear whether the surgery would be rescheduled or whether further counselling would help him make a different decision.
