The Netherlands suffered a heartbreaking exit from the 2026 World Cup after losing 3-2 on penalties to Morocco following a 1-1 draw in their Round of 32 clash.
Ismael Saibari converted the decisive spot-kick to seal Morocco’s place in the next round after the Dutch squandered a late lead in Monterrey.
Morocco dominated much of the contest, creating the better opportunities throughout normal time. Bart Verbruggen kept the Netherlands in the game with several outstanding saves, while Micky van de Ven produced a vital recovery challenge to deny Achraf Hakimi when the defender appeared destined to score.
The breakthrough eventually came in the 72nd minute when Cody Gakpo finished confidently after pressure from Crysencio Summerville sparked a quick counterattack.
However, rather than pushing for a second goal, the Netherlands retreated deeper into their own half, allowing Morocco to pile on the pressure. The resistance finally broke in stoppage time when Issa Diop headed home the equaliser to force extra time.
Morocco continued to threaten, with Soufiane Rahimi coming close before Verbruggen produced another superb save to keep the Dutch alive.
The match was ultimately decided from the penalty spot. Teun Koopmeiners scored the Netherlands’ opening penalty, but misses from Justin Kluivert and Quinten Timber, along with a save by Yassine Bounou to deny Summerville, handed Morocco the advantage.
Saibari calmly converted the winning penalty to complete another memorable World Cup triumph for the Atlas Lions. For the Netherlands, the defeat marks an early exit that is likely to intensify scrutiny over Ronald Koeman’s cautious tactics and conservative approach despite possessing a squad filled with attacking talent.
