William Ruto on Sunday made a surprise visit to the Northlands City project in Ruiru, Kiambu County, a major urban development linked to the family of former President Uhuru Kenyatta.
Photos circulating online showed the President touring sections of the multi-billion-shilling project alongside senior government officials and representatives involved in the development. The visit quickly attracted attention across political and economic circles because of the project’s close association with the influential Kenyatta family.
Northlands City is among Kenya’s largest private urban projects and is expected to transform thousands of acres in Ruiru into a modern mixed-use city featuring residential estates, schools, hospitals, industrial zones, and commercial centres.
The development has long been viewed as a symbol of the Kenyatta family’s business and land investments in Kenya, making Ruto’s visit politically significant given the strained relationship that emerged between him and Uhuru after the 2022 General Election.
Although no immediate official statement was issued explaining the purpose of the tour, reports indicated the President was inspecting ongoing infrastructure and investment projects within the region.
Allies of the Kenya Kwanza administration welcomed the visit, describing it as evidence of the government’s willingness to support large-scale private investments capable of generating employment opportunities and boosting economic growth.
At the same time, political observers interpreted the visit as a possible signal of easing tensions between Ruto and Uhuru following years of political rivalry and public disagreements after the transition of power.
The unexpected appearance at the project has since triggered widespread discussion online, with many Kenyans debating whether the visit carried broader political symbolism beyond economic development and investment interests.
