Senator John Methu has reignited debate surrounding the impeachment of former DP Rigathi Gachagua following recent remarks by Edwin Sifuna. In a firm statement released on Friday, May 15, Methu commented on the political developments that occurred during the intense impeachment process, asserting that political betrayal significantly influenced the final result.

He noted that some leaders outside the Mt. Kenya region backed the impeachment, believing that distancing President Ruto from Gachagua would politically weaken the President.

Methu pointed out that Senator Sifuna and others openly contended that by removing Gachagua from the equation, Ruto would be left exposed in upcoming political contests.

Furthermore, Methu claimed that during the height of the impeachment discussions, he, Gachagua, and another senator met privately with a senior political figure in an attempt to garner support against what he called political aggression from Ruto’s faction.

While the leader initially pledged to assist them and even reached out to senators associated with the minority leadership, Methu indicated that the circumstances took an unexpected turn later on.He mentioned that a senator had privately told him that the prominent leader had changed their mind after referencing longstanding political issues related to the Mt. Kenya area.

Methu characterized this situation as a failed political strategy by saying, “the gazelle ran to the leopard for help.”

While speaking at the funeral of EALA MP Kanini Kega’s mother, Annah Ndung’u, Sifuna urged Gachagua to forgive him and the other ODM leaders who had supported his impeachment.

He emphasized that the United Opposition must take necessary actions, which involved moving beyond past grievances and coming together to oppose Ruto.
