Kiraitu

Former Kiraitu Murungi and his wife Priscilla Murungi are grieving the heartbreaking loss of their lastborn daughter, Anita Kendi Kiraitu.

News of Anita’s death was made public on Thursday, May 14, through a condolence message shared by former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua.

In his statement, Gachagua described the news as deeply painful and extended his sympathies to the Murungi family during what he termed a difficult period of mourning.

“I have learnt of the passing of Anita Kendi Kiraitu, daughter of our respected elder and 2nd Governor of Meru County, Kiraitu Murungi, with deep sorrow,” Gachagua said.

Since the announcement was made, Kiraitu and his wife have not issued a public statement regarding the tragedy.

The silence from the family has drawn messages of comfort from friends, political allies, and Kenyans who remember the former governor’s long career in public service.

Kiraitu Murungi is widely known for his contribution to Kenya’s political history, especially during the struggle for multiparty democracy in the era of former president Daniel arap Moi.

He worked closely with opposition figures including Raila Odinga, Gitobu Imanyara, and Kenneth Matiba in pushing for political reforms.

Born in January 1952 in Kionyo village, South Imenti, Kiraitu rose from a humble background to become one of the most recognizable political figures from the Mt Kenya region.

He is the firstborn in a family of 18 children, a background that many close to him say shaped his hardworking and fearless character.

The Murungi family is now receiving condolences from leaders and supporters across the country as they come to terms with the painful loss of daughter.
