Tension gripped Joska in Machakos County after a retired senior police officer fatally shot a 24‑year‑old man on Monday morning.
Joseph Chege was struck at close range in the waist outside a supermarket along Kangundo Road under circumstances that remain unclear.
Witnesses reported chaos as shoppers and pedestrians fled in fear. Bystanders quickly called for help, and Chege was rushed to hospital but died shortly after arrival.
Police swiftly traced the retired officer, a former Chief Inspector, to his home and seized his Ceska pistol loaded with 11 rounds.
Though he had retired, police confirmed he was legally permitted to hold a firearm. He was later detained at a local police station, pending further investigations into the motive behind the shooting.
Family members of the victim are demanding justice, describing Chege as a hardworking young man whose life was cut short without reason. Residents of Joska await the probe’s outcome, hoping the justice system delivers fairness.
Police have pledged a thorough investigation, promising the officer will face the law if culpable.
Recent months have seen rising cases of licensed gun holders accused of reckless shootings, with security experts urging stricter monitoring of firearm ownership to avert tragedies.
