A man in Kayole will live to tell the tale after he was shot, taken to the morgue, and later discovered to be alive by attendants.

In a chilling and miraculous turn of events on Christmas night, David Monda—whom police accused of going on a terrifying rampage—was gunned down after pulling a sword on officers.

His body was rushed to the Mama Lucy Kibaki Hospital morgue, presumed lifeless.Monda, accused of turning the streets into a nightmare, literally came back from the brink of death after being shot in the neck, with the bullet exiting through the left side of his face.

The court heard that at around 10:30 p.m. on Christmas Day in Dominion-Bembani, Embakasi Central, Monda and his still-at-large accomplices allegedly terrorized innocent people.

They robbed one victim, Harrison Gichuki, of a phone worth KSh 9,000 and KSh 500 in cash while threatening him with a sword.

When police arrived, the gang scattered. Monda, however, chose defiance: He drew a sword, charged at an officer, and prompted a colleague to fire what was intended as a warning shot into the air, but it tore through Monda’s neck instead.

He collapsed instantly.A quick search revealed an imitation firearm hidden in his waistband and 20 rolls of suspected bhang.According to his counsel, Lina Nzilani, the accused was presumed dead due to his unresponsive state.

He was taken to the Mama Lucy Kibaki Hospital morgue, where attendants donned gloves in a bid to process him for preservation.

However, while doing so, they discovered he was breathing. They immediately stopped the procedures and rushed him to the emergency ward, where he was examined and declared alive.

He was then referred to Kenyatta National Hospital for further specialized treatment and stabilized before police arrested him again.

This came after they learned that the person they thought was dead was still alive.Appearing before Makadara Senior Resident Magistrate Wandia Nyamu, Monda now faces charges of robbery with violence and unlawful possession of an imitation firearm.

Ms. Nzilani asked the court to defer taking the plea because he cannot speak or even chew.

According to Ms. Nzilani, Monda had been shot in the neck by a police bullet that ripped straight through and exited his left cheek in a spray of blood.

The court considered Ms. Nzilani’s application and directed that he be taken back to Kenyatta National Hospital for urgent care, with the case set to be mentioned in January 2026.
