Veteran broadcaster Jeff Koinange has returned to the airwaves after weeks of silence that left fans anxious and social media awash with speculation. His absence sparked wild rumours about his health, with some users even going as far as announcing him dead. But on his comeback, Jeff stood firm, dismissing the chatter with humour and the familiar energy that has defined his long career.
During his morning radio show on Jamhuri Day, Jeff veered into personal history, sharing a rarely told chapter of his family’s past. The award-winning journalist recalled how deeply independence meant to his father, Frederick Mbiu Koinange—son of the famed Chief Koinange—who was among several family members detained during the struggle for freedom.
Jeff narrated that his parents married on December 12, 1959, exactly four years before Kenya achieved independence. When the new nation was finally declared, his father was at Uhuru Gardens, overwhelmed by emotions that had been held back through years of detention.
“My mother told us later that he cried,” Jeff said. “He had been detained for seven years. My grandfather had been detained for nine. More than fifteen members of the family had been locked up. Freedom came at a price.”
His listeners responded with warmth, many expressing relief to hear his voice again and praising his storytelling—an art he has long been celebrated for. Others admitted they had been quietly searching online for updates, worried by the swirling rumours.
Jeff also addressed influencer Xtian Dela’s leaked messages, confirming he had seen the concerns but assuring fans he was “alive, well, and back to work.”
His return has reignited excitement among loyal viewers and listeners, marking a powerful comeback for a media icon whose voice many had missed.
