Mary Gathii, a young girl from Nyeri, has captured national attention after excelling in the inaugural Kenya Junior Secondary Education Assessment (KJSEA) exams, whose results were released on Thursday, December 11, 2025.

The results, released by Education Cabinet Secretary Julius Ogamba, marked a key milestone in the rollout of the Competency-Based Curriculum (CBC), with over one million candidates nationwide sitting for the assessment.

Mary, a Grade 9 student at Ndima Kanini Academy in Karatina, Nyeri, scored an outstanding 71 out of a possible 72 points. Her performance included Exceeds Expectations One (EE1) grades in English, Kiswahili, Mathematics.

Integrated Science, Agriculture, Social Studies, Christian Religious Education, Creative Arts, and Sports, with an Exceeds Expectations Two (EE2) in Pre-Technical Studies. Each EE1 earned her eight points while the EE2 added seven points, giving her a total of 71 points.

The remarkable achievement has drawn praise from Kenyans across social media, with many lauding her dedication, hard work, and the strong foundation provided by her school.

Mary’s results place her among the top-performing students nationally, and she is now preparing to transition to senior high school, where expectations are equally high.
