After Wiper Party leader Kalonzo Musyoka revealed that a group of 100 attorneys is getting ready to submit a petition to halt the proposed sale of a portion of Safaricom, the government now faces a new obstacle.

Speaking at a church service in Kasarani, Nairobi, Kalonzo claimed that after meeting the legal team, they all decided to oppose the move.

“I met with one hundred attorneys from Mount Kenya South yesterday, and we decided to file a serious petition to stop the auction and sale of Safaricom Kenya,” Kalonzo stated. He continued by accusing the government of preparing to sell Safaricom at auction without consulting Kenyans.

Kalonzo claimed that rather than safeguarding a business that is crucial to the nation’s economy, the process was hurried and motivated by those out for personal gain.

In the meantime, the government intends to sell 15% of its Safaricom stock. The government anticipates raising over 250 billion shillings from the sale of the shares at a price of 34 shillings apiece.

According to a recent statement by Treasury Cabinet Secretary John Mbadi, the funds would serve as seed money for the National Infrastructure Fund, which is intended to assist significant national development initiatives. Public discussion has already been triggered by the proposed sale.

Some Kenyans worry that it would erode government control of Safaricom, while others see it as a means of raising funds for development. If the courts decide to step in, the 100 lawyers’ petition is anticipated to boost pressure and potentially postpone the sale.
