United Opposition candidate Newton Karish has finally spoken after his defeat in the Mbeere North by-election, with his response coming just as a court petition seeks to overturn Leonard Wa Muthende’s win on claims that he was not a registered voter in the constituency, making him allegedly ineligible to run.
Karish, a veteran Embu musician and MCA for Muminji Ward, released a statement on December 4, ending a five-day silence following the tightly contested November 27 race.
In his message, he urged his supporters to remain calm as legal processes unfold, assuring them that he is committed to pursuing justice.
“I urge you to be calm, maintain peace and be patient as we pursue the next steps to fight for justice over the just concluded by-election outcome,” Karish said.
His appeal for calm came hours after two voters moved to court seeking the revocation of Wa Muthende’s victory.
The petitioners argue that Wa Muthende’s alleged failure to register as a voter in Mbeere North renders his candidacy invalid, a claim that if proven could trigger a fresh election.
Karish expressed gratitude to the thousands who backed his bid, celebrating supporters from all walks of life for believing in his vision for the constituency. He noted that their unity demonstrated the power of a community determined to shape its future.
“Today, I celebrate you, the peasants, the youth, the women, the elders, and every resident who believes in a better and brighter Mbeere North,” he wrote.
Despite falling short by a margin of 494 votes, Karish reaffirmed his commitment to serve with integrity and humility.
Meanwhile, the by-election remains clouded by mutual accusations of irregularities from both UDA and the United Opposition as the court prepares to determine the fate of Wa Muthende’s win.
