Trans Nzoia Governor George Natembeya is staring at one of the toughest political decisions of his career as pressure mounts on him to choose between national prominence and defending his county seat in 2027. The outspoken county boss, who has recently emerged as one of the loudest critics of the Kenya Kwanza administration, is reportedly being considered as Wiper Party leader Stephen Kalonzo Musyoka’s running mate in the 2027 presidential race.

But the offer, though politically tempting and symbolically significant, comes with its own risks — especially if Natembeya decides to stay in Trans Nzoia and seek re-election instead. Reports indicate that a powerful political storm is already brewing, with heavyweight forces quietly assembling an alliance determined to deny him a second term.

Sources familiar with the unfolding rivalry suggest that National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetang’ula and Prime Cabinet Secretary Musalia Mudavadi are plotting to rally behind Kiminini MP KaKai Bisau as their preferred candidate to dethrone Natembeya. With their national influence, government networks and financial muscle, the two leaders reportedly believe Bisau stands the best chance of clipping Natembeya’s growing regional influence, which has unsettled key Western Kenya political players.

The move is also seen as payback, following Natembeya’s increasingly confrontational stance against the Kenya Kwanza leadership.

Adding to the governor’s headaches is the possibility of former Health Cabinet Secretary Susan Nakhumicha entering the race. Her time in the national cabinet and strong appeal among women voters could significantly split the electorate and weaken Natembeya’s support base.

The situation becomes even more complicated after former Kiminini MP Chris Wamalwa signaled his intention to contest the governorship in 2027. His return injects yet another powerful contender into an already crowded and volatile field, setting the stage for what could become one of the most bruising political battles in Trans Nzoia’s recent history.
