Nyambego was traumatized, not only by the pain of losing his mother, who died during treatment in hospital, but also, as he himself put it, by the unfulfilled promise of building her a decent home where she could live comfortably and die a dignified death. She died before she could ever see that dream come to life, leaving him defeated and heartbroken.
An emotional Nyambego expressed the plans he had shared with his late mother. “KSh 500,000 will go to the house, and KSh 400,000 on the wall,” he said, detailing how he had envisioned constructing a secure and beautiful compound for her. Unfortunately, she had been battling deteriorating health and the drain in finances due to her medication, and he had no place to give her a proper, restful burial.
His moving story, narrated on TikTok, quickly went viral on the media platform, captivating the hearts of thousands of Kenyans. Moved by his honesty, pain, and sincerity, TikToker joined forces for his cause. In a short period of time, well-wishers had collected over KSh 2 million to help Nyambego honour his mother’s dream-seeing him educated, even in her absence.
Thanks to the overwhelming response, he was finally able to secure land, build a house his mother was longing for, and give her a respectful resting place. Thus, that fundraiser became a kind of unifying symbol of compassion and digital community during times of hardship.
In turn, Nyambego was utterly grateful for that unexpected generosity; though his mother did not live to see the home, he said it gave him peace, knowing that one of her last wishes had been granted. His story has remained a strong reminder that, even amid loss, humanity’s compassion can offer the possibility of renewal and recovery.
