A fresh controversy has erupted after the Machakos County Government issued a formal demand letter to media personality and comedian Oga Obinna following a viral interview he conducted with fellow comedian Sammy Kioko.
In the widely circulated interview published on Obinna’s YouTube channel, Kioko allegedly made claims implicating the Machakos County Government in certain malpractices, prompting swift action from the county’s legal department.
According to a letter signed by the Machakos County Solicitor, the county accused Obinna of publishing and disseminating false, malicious, and misleading information about the devolved unit.
“This letter is therefore to demand that you supply us with the documents confirming the said Sammy Kioko’s claim against the County Government of Machakos as published in your show, failure of which we will be forced to take action against yourselves for the hosting, publishing and disseminating false information on your YouTube channel and your social media channels, whereas the said information is skewed, false, malicious and does not paint the real picture,” the letter read in part.
The county further alleged that Obinna’s platform had “besmirched the reputation of county officials and other leaders”, insisting that the persons mentioned in the interview had no involvement in the affairs being discussed.
The administration maintained that it was within its right to defend the integrity and reputation of its officers and warned that it would pursue legal redress should Obinna fail to comply with the demand.
As of Thursday morning, Obinna had not issued a formal response to the letter.
However, the video in question continues to attract massive viewership and heated debate online, with many Kenyans weighing in on issues of freedom of expression versus accountability in digital journalism.
The unfolding standoff has reignited conversation around the responsibility of content creators when airing claims involving public institutions, as counties increasingly monitor how they are portrayed on social media.
