Six teachers at Koyore Comprehensive School in Kochia ward, Rangwe Sub-county, Homa Bay, escaped death narrowly after the staff room they were using as an office collapsed.
The shocking incident happened on Wednesday when the teachers were inside the room while their colleagues were attending to pupils in the classrooms.School head teacher Joshua Ganda said the collapse took place suddenly, but none of the teachers were hurt.
He explained that the teachers first heard a cracking sound before the wall came down.
Some of them panicked, but he thanked God that no one was injured in the incident.
The collapse destroyed several items, including the main electricity meter box, which supplies power to the school.
Ganda noted that officials from the Department of Public Works would be visiting the school to assess the extent of the damage and establish its value.
Following the incident, the school has been forced to keep office materials in a classroom meant for grade six pupils. The children now take lessons under trees, while teachers are also carrying out their work in the open.
Ganda said they had a lot of equipment which could not be left in an open space, so they were now using the grade six classroom to keep the items.
The head teacher raised concerns that the incident had disrupted the school’s academic calendar.
He appealed for help from government agencies and well-wishers.
He urged the government, NG-CDF and the county government of Homa Bay to intervene and support the school in putting up an administration block and classrooms.
It is suspected that heavy rainfall followed by strong winds weakened the wall before it caved in.
