A viral video that initially drew sympathy from Kenyans has now taken a shocking twist. What started as a heartbreaking story of a struggling mother thrown out of a mabati house has been revealed to be a well-crafted lie.

Comedian Eric Omondi, through his Sisi Kwa Sisi initiative, quickly stepped in to help the woman. Moved by the story, he mobilised support and, within days, raised nearly $1 million to help her and her child rebuild their lives. However, investigations later revealed that the emotional story was fabricated.

In a surprising confession, the woman admitted that the man many thought was her husband was not even her partner. He was just a passerby who happened to be present during the filming of the emotional video. Eric Omondi shared the truth on his platforms, sparking heated debate across Facebook and other social media spaces.

Kenyans were quick to react. Many expressed anger and disappointment, saying such deceit makes it difficult for genuine cases to be supported. Some pointed out that in a country where many families cannot afford basic needs, raising over a million shillings under false pretences was shocking and painful.

Others went further, describing the incident as a betrayal that risks damaging public trust. They warned that such scams could discourage well-wishers from donating in the future, even when real cases of suffering emerge.

At the same time, some Kenyans used the incident as a reminder of the need for transparency in fundraising. They argued that stories must be verified before people contribute money. Still, the revelation left behind a bitter taste, with many questioning how far people are willing to go for financial gain.

This saga has raised wider concerns about honesty, compassion, and responsibility in charity work. While Eric Omondi has vowed to remain committed to helping those in need, the case highlights just how fragile trust can be. Once broken, it becomes extremely hard to rebuild.
