Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen has cautioned Wiper Party leader Kalonzo Musyoka against expecting automatic support from former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua for the 2027 presidential race.

Speaking in Makueni, Murkomen advised Kalonzo that the only way to secure political relevance and influence is by joining a broad-based government, rather than relying on perceived automatic backing from opposition allies.

Murkomen emphasized Gachagua’s independent political stance, urging Kalonzo to join a broad-based government for greater influence.

“Huyu mtu ya cousins itafika saa hii aanze kusema kuna macousins wakubwa na wadogo. Ambieni Kalonzo, the safest place to make a difference is in a broad-based government,” Murkomen said.

He recalled past coalition talks, noting President William Ruto’s personal invitation to Kalonzo to form a government together, which Kalonzo declined to remain in opposition.

Murkomen’s remarks come as Gachagua, now mobilizing support for his Democracy for the Citizens Party (DCP) in the United States, positions himself as a key opposition figure.

Gachagua has expressed readiness to back a system-favored candidate but stressed equitable sharing of government positions, good governance, and combating corruption and extrajudicial killings.

The former Deputy President also dismissed claims that opposition leaders have settled on former Interior CS Fred Matiang’i as their 2027 flagbearer, calling such reports divisive.

Murkomen’s warning highlights growing speculation about opposition alliances ahead of the 2027 polls, with Kalonzo urged to align with a broader coalition for political relevance.
