The Kenya Meteorological Department has issued a yellow warning for heavy rains and strong winds from 17th to 19th August 2025. The alert covers the Lake Victoria Basin, Rift Valley, and the Highlands of Western and Eastern Rift.

Residents in these regions should prepare for rainfall exceeding 20 millimeters in 24 hours. The heaviest downpours are expected on the first day and will gradually ease by the 20th of August.

Strong winds are forecasted in the eastern sector, reaching speeds above 25 knots. These gusts could damage property, uproot trees, and disrupt transport across the area.

Authorities are urging people to avoid walking or driving through moving water. Flash floods are likely in low-lying and flood-prone zones, putting lives and property at risk.

Lightning is expected to accompany the heavy rains, making outdoor activities dangerous. People should avoid sheltering under trees or other exposed structures during storms.

Farmers along the lakeshore and in the highlands are advised to protect crops and livestock. Heavy rains may wash away soil, damage young plants, and threaten the local farming economy.

County governments are readying emergency teams to assist vulnerable communities. Residents should stay alert, follow updates, and adhere to guidance from disaster management offices.

Drivers are warned to exercise extra caution on highways and rural roads. Poor visibility and slippery surfaces could increase the likelihood of accidents during this period.

Schools, offices, and public facilities should take precautions to keep children and staff safe. Staying indoors and limiting travel is recommended until conditions improve.

The Kenya Meteorological Department will continue monitoring the situation and provide updates as needed. Communities are encouraged to stay prepared, prioritize safety, and act responsibly during this yellow warning period.
