In the film taken at night, obviously terrified passengers force the matatu to halt at a nearby petrol station.
Passengers recognized the driver as driving an Eastern Line Travel van, and he appeared very intoxicated.
They forced him from his seat, stumbling and blinking, and left him standing at the petrol station’s waiting area.
As he stood outside the car, a passenger filming went on a rant, revealing the matatu’s registration number, KBB 070W, which he exhibited in the video.
“This is the driver, and he is quite drunk; driver amelewa kama maji. Driver amelewa na anatuendesha, vile anafikiria. Amelewa kitu ingine.
This is the car, hello ndio hiyo gari inaitwa Eastern Line Travel. Hi, Mombasa Road. Jamaa amelewa, tu vile anafikiria. “Ndio hiyo gari, KBB 070W,” the guy passenger said while shooting.
His voice shakes with wrath and disbelief as he pans the camera to reveal the dazed driver and the matatu.
“Guys, ebu mniambie kama sasa tutaendelea hivi; jamaa amelewa kama kitu ingine, he’s very very drunk,” the man says, pleading on Kenyans online to assess the gravity of the situation.
Passengers, many of whom were obviously agitated, swarmed the driver and began demanding a return of their payment.
The travelers immediately began questioning about the location of the matatu tout, who appeared to have vanished in the hubbub.
The video finishes with a police officer arriving on the scene and attempting to take control of the situation, as the inebriated driver stands awkwardly by, oblivious of the magnitude of the pandemonium.
