Kisii County is mourning the tragic loss of Professor Bishop Josiah Onyancha and his wife, who died on the evening of August 6, 2025, in a devastating road accident along the Narok–Mai Mahiu highway.

According to reports from their son, Edwin Nyarangi a senior journalist with The Standard based in Nairobi the couple was en route to the capital to attend a university graduation ceremony when their vehicle was involved in a fatal head-on collision.

The crash, which occurred near Ntulele in Narok County, involved their private car and a lorry, and tragically claimed both their lives on the spot.

Police from the Narok Traffic Department have confirmed that investigations are ongoing, though preliminary reports suggest speeding and poor visibility may have played a role in the accident.

Prof. Onyancha, who vied for the Kisii gubernatorial seat as an independent candidate in the 2022 General Election, was more than a politician.

He was a towering academic and a deeply respected church leader.

With a PhD in Library and Information Science from the University of Zululand in South Africa, Prof. Onyancha held the position of research professor at the Department of Information Science at the University of South Africa (UNISA).

His scholarly contributions, particularly in the areas of bibliometrics, informetrics, and knowledge management, have been cited in international academic circles.

His tenure as Head of Department at UNISA was marked by a commitment to mentoring young African scholars and promoting data-driven policy.

Despite a thriving academic career abroad, Prof. Onyancha never severed his ties with his homeland.
